Well, I gave the sump and the pick up a thorough clean out (Don't ask how! getting rid of the crud seems to take extreme measures! )

I didn't change the pump on the grounds that the customer admitted that he had driven the car for some miles after the light had come on and the noise started. I was reluctant to styart spending significant dosh on an engine that might already be destroyed!

    Anyway..

On starting it clattered for about 1500mS (IE, more than one second but less than two!) I took this to indicate that the pump is actually working pretty well.

There were no other nasty noises. It will be a matter of time before we (that is owner and myself) will be confident that no other damage has taken place. But I think we are going to be all right.

On another note. The amount of sludge was not great. Its just that it was like coarse ground Bakelite and had almost completely clogged the pick up strainer.

Obviously it is not possible to physically clean out the rest of the engine without completely stripping it down and rebuilding it. But, is there any additive out there (Forte??) that can SAFELY dissolve this type of crud and clear it out without risking further problems.

Otherwise the vehicle is still a ticking bomb, despite my (temporary) fix!
