Ford Transit 1.8 TDi 2004 - Battery light on and under charging #Archived Message

This van came in with battery light on and slightly under charging, jumping in feet first we decided to change alternator, although charge is better the battery light still comes on after a few seconds, not sure how to test these but suspect it was never an alternator fault. there is B+ at the red wire on the 3 pin plug. is there an easy way to test these or does anyone know of a common fault?
