I Saw one of those Warnings Last week,

Another garage fitted the Starter motor and then Advised the customer to have it checked out. . I told the customer that if the Garage wasn't capable of doing the checks, then they shouldn't be doing the job in the first place.

The reason for me saying that is that The garage wants to do the job, But does not want to accept the responsibility of it going wrong and them having to stand the cost of the repair.

So if they ask me to check it out, and I find nothing wrong ( for next to no charge as the customer has already paid over the odds for the job doing at the garage ) Then when it goes wrong it will Be --------- Well We told you to get it checked out. ( Blame Tony Sefton )

The Warning Sticker was in a Unipart Box. ( TSB 006, I think the code was, but whether that is a GM TSB or Just a Unipart one, I am not sure, Most likely a unipart one )

The Main thing when fitting a starter motor is to know why the Original starter motor has failed, Don't just accept that its faulty, You need to know why its gone faulty, ( i,e normal wear and tear or stuck in mesh )

On Early Vauxhalls it used to be the ignition switch contacts that burnt out and held the Starter motor in mesh, ( we used to fit loads ) It Appears that on most Later ones, The ignition switch is OK but the fault is caused by the Barrel and keys getting slightly stiff and holding it in the start position.

The Only problem with this is that it is now expensive and time consuming to do the job properly as if you change the barrel and keys to match the vehicle, it takes a few days to order the barrel to chassis no, or you buy one off the shelf and end up with 2 sets of keys, the new keys have to be programmed to the vehicle or swap the chips over in the keys etc.

After Fitting a new starter motor on a Car, how long do you have to guarrantee that Something else on the vehicle is not going to damage the new starter motor. ?? Who's responsibility is it when it goes wrong due to no fault of the fitter. ?? We always make sure that we know why it went wrong in the first place and at least if it comes back burnt out at a later date it is caused by something that didn't destroy the original starter motor.

We do not Replace either the ignition switch or barrel anymore, but we do guarrantee the job when its done. ( And no, We do not Bodge a push button onto the Dash like some of our local competitors in the Starter repair business )

    H.T.H. Tony.
