Hi Steve, the same thing happened to my own A4 last year.The bit of shaft that holds the snap ring in place on the driveshaft has sheared off and fell into the diff. You need to find this bit and pool weld it back onto the end of the shaft to hold the ring in place.Done mine last year like this and had no problem since. To answer "would fitting new bearings (drive in fit) retain the joint in the diff?" NO. Hth Sean |
