    Hi.

    I have just dug out my old RAC training notes!

    In order to test if an coil is being switched you need to connect your multimeter to batt + and coil -. Ig on should be 0 volts (if I remember correctly). Cranking should be 1.5v - 5v (the amp switching to earth) depending on the ignition type.

    If volts are at 0 or batt volts then you need to carry out the same check at term 1 on the amp. If no switching signal then check the signal to the amp from the distributor signal.

    The amp will need a good ignition supply and a good earth too.

    Boy! That takes me back!
