    From my experience, what usually happens is when the starter engages the ring gear it shudders it causing the crankshaft sensor reading to distort.

    The ECU cancels the starter because the crank signal is not understood. This happens in a split second. You will often notice the tacho needle to bounce strangely as you try to crank.

    As was mentioned earlier, Mercedes have a grease that is pasted onto the ring gear to allow a smoother starter engagement.

    For some reason it only seems to effect the V6 & V8's.
