I had a 1997 2.0l petrol Galaxy in yesterday for service and MOT, one of the jobs needed was new pads, after fitting and road testing I was convinced I had more pedal travel than when I brought it in, from about 20 miles away, I also fitted Ferodo pads, the topline ones not the budget, never use the budget ones, but by the time I had delivered it back last night the pedal height and bite had recovered (another 20 mile run back), so it may just be a bedding in issue, passed the MOT rolling road brake test with the new pads so efficiency was there, and as always told customer to go easy on brakes for a couple of hundred miles to ensure bedding in.
