BMW 323 2000 6CYL - Heater fan motor works intermittent Archived Message

Had this car in for a service & mot. Customer complains that the fan motor hardly ever works.
This has got the digital control panel for the heater & air con.
All the control panel works and the fan motor display goes up and down fine.
Have any of you come across this before, is it a control unit fault, and if so where is it fitted.
