Thanks for that Tony. The AA man who recovered the car is an ex-Peugeot man and told my customer that in his experience this sort of failure always meant a clutch change. I had just assumed that it was down to the part being a grotty bit of plastic, anyway, the lady wants me to replace the clutch and cable - and of course I will check that the release arm pivot is free.
