Nissan Micra 1.0 94 K11 - Cooling system problem, overheating, fan will not cut in Archived Message

Hi guys, car is in for over heating and fan wont cut in. There appears to be no coolant switch in the engine or radiator. How does the fan know when the engine temp rises to cut in ??????? I have rung the dealer who is normally very helpful and their workshop had a K11 in and suggested that the switch is part of the fan motor its self if all the wiring & relay are good and motor works, i find it hard to beleive that the coolant switch is part of the fan motor its self. Just a thought on the end of the head are two sensors one for the guage & the other for the ECU is the cooling fan controlled by the ECU???? I thought that this system too early for that sort of control. Any suggestions would be most welcome TIA.
