Inspection of the tank showed that it appeared to have a standard fuel pump cartridge in it.
I went back to the carbon canister and checked the solenoid valve which was found to be open all the time! I fitted a new canister/valve and the engine runs fine now.
I opened the valve and found what appeared to be carbon particles jamming the valve open. It also did not appear to be correctly fitted to the carbon canister with a lot of water in evidence.
The canister was quite heavy so it was either full of petrol or water or both. There is a small filter that I would think is there to prevent the carbon migrating. So faulty filter, water contamination or non-standard fuel tank causing the problem? Only time will tell.
Shaun.
