It seems that E39's of around 2000' vintage have the 16 pin OBD connection AND the old 20 pin round connector under the bonnet! (something I hadn't even considered).
I had been going into the BMW system using the OBD connection , and getting basic comms with the engine , gearbox, airbag but not much else.He said to use the round connector, although his launch would comm with all the modules but still wouldn'nt disable the auto locks.His machine was last updated 3 yrs ago.
I used the 20 pin round connector under the bonnet, (my programme was last updated about 6 months ago, version 46.3 I think) then went to E39 ,then coding/programme then ZKE central body electronics (not necessarily in that order!) and its all there including other settings for lights, alarm and locking - job done!
