Tony may be on the money with the faulty remotes.
Audi issued a bad batch around this model year - can you supply the part number off the fob & i'll look into whether yours is in the affected batch.

I've had one occasion where both remotes expired within days of one another.

Remedy is 2 x new remotes, which iirc are around £90 a piece.
