Recently had a good customer report a funny noise on his 2.5 TDI T4 Transporter, "sounds a bit like it did when the water pump failed and wrecked the engine a few years ago", he said.
He drove it to me and, yes, it was noisy in the timing belt area.
I drove it in to the workshop, pulled the covers and found that the tensioner had broken and wasn't tensioning anything!
How the belt hadn't jumped the pulleys I'll never know.
Camera-phones are great - I took a video of it to show the man and keep for my "black museum".
