What is your thinnest cambelt on a running engine? #

Just done a cambelt on a Lexus IS200. Owner had complained of "A funny noise"

The belt had been displaced by an off centre guide pully and had worn away untill only about 3/16" width remained!

I reckon one more trip to the shops would have done for it!

Is this a record??

(Needless to say, the "Funny noise" had been going on for several weeks)

I had a vauxhall 1.7 X17DTL engine worn down that

far once. It was hanging up in the workshop for

years as a show piece to customers..

Not the thinnest but I had a 99 Transit 2.5 in years ago for the first time since my customer had bought it. He just asked for oil and filters to be changed and to have a look in at the brakes.
After advising that the belt should be done if he had no history of its replacement, I pulled the covers. I couldn't believe it was still running. There were teeth missing everywhere along the length of the belt that had collected in the bottom cover yet it hadn't even jumped. No camera phones back then so no photographic evidence for you, but I swear it's true. Not the worst engine if the belt went admittedly, but inconvenient all the same.

we once had a customer bring in their recent purchase(98 scenic) in for a full service, we advised a cam belt change as we could find no evidence of it being done recently. car came back on a low loader next day... you guessed it, the belt had unloaded the next day on their way to work. i think she had done about 15 miles.

Had a V40 in for cambelt cahnge a couple of yers ago, You could see through the belt!! just a few bits of string with teeth stuck on them the outside rubber had completely worn off.
I told the customer how lucky he was and he replied" i knew if wasnt good thats why its here"

Not thinnest but slackest...

Recently had a good customer report a funny noise on his 2.5 TDI T4 Transporter, "sounds a bit like it did when the water pump failed and wrecked the engine a few years ago", he said.

He drove it to me and, yes, it was noisy in the timing belt area.

I drove it in to the workshop, pulled the covers and found that the tensioner had broken and wasn't tensioning anything!

How the belt hadn't jumped the pulleys I'll never know.

Camera-phones are great - I took a video of it to show the man and keep for my "black museum".
