Hello Damian, these are oil controlled via a solonoid valve next to number 1 spark plug. Usual symptoms are a loud top end rattle on tick-over that goes with a little throttle. (The de-phaser pulley wears internally). Replacement is straight forward enough. I always lock the cams & mark the ring gear on these engines to be sure the crank pin goes in the right place, (remember there's no key-way on crank) Remove the de-phaser cap (large allen key from memory). A little oil will come out, then you can remove the pulley. When you fit the new one, turn it backwards & forwards until it locks in the set position. Hope this is of some help. Alan.
