I think its basically down to two things, bore wash from the unburnt fuel condensing on the cylinder walls and losing the seal between rings and bore. A few squirts of oil down the plug holes helps here. I also think on many occasions the thick oil in the lifters causes the valves to be lifted off their seats slightly. As you sit there cranking the engine over they gradually collapse and restore compression. Certainly the borewash symptom is the cause of my wifes Daihatsu Sirion non start when one of the kids moves the car to get their bike/skateboard out of the garage. This car is so basic, non-hydraulic tappets and even a cable operating the throttle........
