OK, could you get communication with it after you had the crash data cleared?

If you got no communication to this and its the only module that is not communicating then what i would be doing is checking the supplies and earth to the module and also scoping the communication line, K-Bus.
Here is a capture of a Mini that I had last year that had no communication with the Airbag module and a few other modules. This was down to the K-bus signal.

If all your signals are good and the supplies, and you are using a dealer level diagnostic tool,then that would be enough, no need to send it anywhere...
