"Monday June 26, 1864. very warm but a little more comfortable than the three days preceeding [sic] it. went on patroll [sic] at night through prince George and Anna Runnun [sic] Counties went with Searjint [sic] Huntoon. stoped [sic] at Mount Zion about 12 at night and slept untill [sic] morning. we nearly scart [sic] a negro in to fits and another pleasant [word undecipherable] one viz promised a pretty Girl to remember her and if I return home safely (and she said she hoped I would) to write to her her [sic] address Miss Lucy Elliot, prince George Virginia. [sic] P.S. I must remember this. wonder if I will ever see her again.
"Tuesday June 28 1864. got breakfast at Mr. Elliots house, his daughter played the piano for us. and we spent a couple of hours very pleasantly. fed our horse and started on again and arrived at Arverrs Ville [sic] about four miles from Mount Zion. from there to Gales Ville [sic] which is on west river near the Herrings bay. got a lunch and came home got here about two oclock stood horse guard all night.
I am curious to know if there are any descendants of "Mr. Elliot" and "Miss Lucy Elliot" still living in the area? I'm rather glad nothing happened between these two post-war because I would not be here! It is also interesting to conjure if Charles indeed tried to write Miss Elliot, but sent the letter to Virginia instead of Maryland, since that is the address he wrote in the diary? If anyone can help, kindly drop a line to pwmay@widomaker.com. Thanks for any assistance. Best wishes, Phil May
