though i can't say for sure if your visual & auditory hallucinations are of supernatural origin, occurances such as these (and weirder) are very common in stage one sleep. Waking to find someone speaking to you or standing beside you are also two symptoms of sleep paralysis. though if these experiences of someone in your room are very realistic & don't include any form of bodily impairment then i don't have any definate answers for you
however, no longer having such experiences after medication leads me to a more organic explaination.
sedatives and sleep aids often inhibit REM sleep. though dreaming can occur in many stages of sleep (including the first). dreams that one may have in other phases of sleep are generally harder to remember.
to get your dreams back try switching to another sleep aid such as ambien or lunesta
OR go the herbal route and try a tea of equal parts valarian & calamus root.
