Re: Takhli thailand
Wayne: when I got there in Jul 65, we were the first PCS contingent--about 700 of us if I remember right. Tghe "Green Monster" was the HQ, had the "1 room BX" and the mailroom. The NCO Club and theatre were right behind the Green Monster. The softball field was right across from the theatre. Fun watching movies as "critters" crawled across your boots! My hooch was just behind the Green Monster and I stayed there my whole tour. We had the "outdoor--outhouse & shower" combo--what an experience! The Thai BX was very close to my hooch and when I got there you could get a nice silk shirt for $1--when I left--about $3!! A "pedicab" ride in town was a Baht (5 cents)--when I left it started at a quarter!! Three bars in July 65--Tom's, Takhli Hut and American Bar--39 bars when I left! I too was an A1C and made SSgt in Jun 66 just before I left. I was astounded as I was a 1st term airman. They wanted me to move to the new NCO quarters near the front gate--I said I only have a month left before I leave. Takhli was a MUCH different place--many more people and facility quality had vastly improved. The ops tempo always amazed me. I was "privy" to many of the most profound and detailed thoughts of the pilots. Being a Life Support troop I had daily contact and was afforded an insight that most could only imagine. Hard to believe that this July I'll have been back 46 years! Takhli--a lifetime ago--a lifetime of GREAT memories! Bob
