My favorite train when I was grownig up in Kalamazoo in the 1960s was New York Central's #13, the mail train. It consisted of baggage and mail storage cars with a rider coach at the end. It was the only train thru Kalamazoo that didn't stop, it just rolled through in the late afternoon.

Most cars had a chalk marking on the upper right hand corner showing its destination, such as "L.A. "MPLS," or "Omaha," etc. I assumed these were used to identify when loading. It also helped me realize how vast that railroads covered the country and carried the commerce. It was hard to imagine a full car of mail for one town, but this was a daily occurrence. Good memories.
