Re: first recollection
I grew up in Saginaw, so my youth saw the Chessie System trains going out to Paines and back again, and usually switching a couple of cars onto the spur line into Malleable. Also, when going to visit my grandmother and aunt in Carrollton, went past remnants of the old Belt Line, which although wasn't used anymore, some of the signs and a set of flashers was still in place. Then, once in Carrollton, my grandmother's house was along the old NYC double-track mainline, which at that time was Grand Trunk. And I remember the GTW switchers running into/out of the grain elevator to Zilwaukee (the second track wasn't used that much and is now mostly gone).
