When I first worked Mershon in the summer of 1976 there was a good amount of activity. On the Ludington side were manifest freights LU75, TL74, MP17 and ML18 as well as the Mt. Pleasant local out and back. There was also the West Side Belt job that ran through the west side neighborhoods down to Malleable and the "Crossing Job" that worked the West Shore and Zilwaukee spurs. There were also some C&O/GTW interchange runs to the tracks in the northwest quadrant. Sometimes there were additional yard jobs to work the grain trains off the Zilwaukee spur. Also, there were trains to/from Paines (Grand Rapids trains) - GR87 and SA88. Sometimes there were also unit grain trains to/from Breckenridge and Hemlock. On the GTW side there were Durand-Bay City manifests 470/471, as well as coal trains (usually with PC/Conrail power) and for a while the Tank Train that handled oil for Essexville that came out of Sarnia. The GTW also had 2 yard jobs that roamed around back and forth all day. Sometimes they also ran a Saginaw Turn out of Durand (890/891).
