The spur closest to M-99/Logan/MLK served three industries; Hazen Lumber, a grocery outlet (Schmitt’s, I think) and the Lansing State Journal received newsprint. The next one in became two track beyond the gate and was Federal Drop Forge which was the last one in Lansing. At one time Lansing had more drop forges than any other city of its size in the US. There were four of them along the South NYC as this line was called. There were dozens of small business on this line and in the 50’s, it was served by three jobs each working 16 hours. In ‘68 it was down to one job working 16 hours. Now Quality Dairy is the only one out there and it gets served once every two weeks.
