The steamship Nellie began service in August 1887 between the GR&I dock and various sawmills around Muskegon Lake. It towed a barge that had two tracks and could carry six rail cars. Rails were built to the end of the GR&I pier and rail cars could move directly from the barge onto the pier. I haven't yet found when the service ended.

The GR&I also built Interlake Park on the west end of the peninsula of land west of North Muskegon. The steamer George P. Savidge provided cruises from the GR&I pier around the lake and to the park. The park became a popular destination for one-day GR&I excursions from Grand Rapids. I haven't found a date when the GR&I sold off the park.
