The Muskegon, Grand Rapids & Indiana did operate an carferry on Lake Muskegon in the late 1880s-early 1890s. The operation was of a New York harbor style, that is, the cars were loaded onto a barge and moved around Lake Muskegon to various mills, the cars were left on the barge and then loaded with lumber while still on the barge. Think of the carferry as an extended siding.
