The village of Paw Paw is located in what was originally named Lafayette Twp. The township was later renamed Paw Paw. The village had no other name than Paw Paw since its incorporation. Lawrence was originally named Brush Creek, but later renamed as Lawrence. It was never, to the best of my knowledge, named Paw Paw. The road showing on the map from Lawrence southwest may have been an indian trail rather than a full-fledged road. Remember that the surveyors were working at a time when there were almost no settlers in the county. Walter Romig's book Michigan Place Names (available in paperback) delves into the name subject. Also, the 1880 Berrien asnd Van Buren County History.
