Thanks Mark. A couple of things. First, I'm pretty sure the E&LS has an accurate list of the cars, so they know where the cars are that they need to dig out. Second, there are a few private crossings along with public roads that have to be cut when the cars are stored. This helps to break up the strings into more manageable lengths. But, as the conductor told me, there is still a lot of walking to be done through weeds in the summer and over snow and ice in winter. It is a tough job.
By the time they have the 500 cars pulled out, they should have the main line pretty well filled up from Middle Inlet north to Wausaukee. I was up there in March when the main was filled and took a couple of shots (not great ones by any stretch, but an illustration). As the photos shows, probably 80%+ of the cars are 55 ft and longer covered hoppers.
