On the GE side of things, we had some older GE CN2400's, so the new were numbered as a continuation of that series. It just kept going, and I think we are in the CN3900's by now...
Older locomotives, like the GTW5900 series, were SD40's purchased used from the UP. CN2000 and CN2100 are used GE units we purchased from the UP and BNSF. GTW4700 series are GP38 units renumbered from the GTW5800 series. GTW4600's were old high cab GP9 units that were converted in Battle Creek to the newer Geep cabs many moons ago.
Then you can get into the older CN, IC, WC, EJE, LMX, DTI, etc. engines, which are all randomly numbered either in original numbers, or stuck into other number schemes somewhere. We might even have a couple of SW's and E8's hidden somewhere on the system. It's all very eclectic. I guess you could classify our older units as "Early Yardsale"...
