As PSK said, each railroad has its own system. Generally different types of engines are grouped into a specific number series. Originally on the C&O, many fell into a series based on the locomotive type: GP7's started with 5700, GP9's series started with 5900, GP30 - 3000 series, GP35 - 3500 series, GP40 - 4000 series, etc. That all went out the window when we went CSX because they renumbered everything based on how the Seaboard did things. Very confusing for us who were used to the Chessie numberings.
