>>> "Ground Control To Major Tom" <<<
As the story goes ~~ Major Tom is informed by Ground Control that a malfunction has occurred in his Spacecraft - but for some reason,
the Astronaut does not receive the message. He remains in Space "Sitting In A Tin Can" far above the World, preparing for his lonely death.
In 1969, David Bowie compared Major Tom's fate to the ending of Stanley Kubrick's film: "2001: A Space Odyssey".
Bowie said at the end of the song, Major Tom is completely emotionless and expresses no view at all about where he's at.
AND THE SAME YEAR....marked the first MOON-LANDING (Apollo 11) by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.
=> So In 1969 ~ Space Was "In" <=
According to "Rolling Stone" Magazine, the lyrics to "Space Oddity" reflect David Bowie's mind and thoughts at the time.
"Rolling Stone" writes:
"As Bowie's pyschedelic astronaut, Major Tom floats helplessly into Outer-Space, we sense that the '60's counterculture has transmuted into a Hopelessness,
which includes Political Reform ~ Planet Earth Is Blue and There's Nothing I Can Do."

As a point of interest ~ in the David Bowie movie "The Man Who Fell To Earth" (1976) there is a segment in the latter part of the film
where we don't see...but we hear...Bob Shane singing "Try To Remember" (from the LP: The Kingston Trio #16)
