I know the police cause you trouble
They cause trouble everywhere
I think Nick substituted "bad guys" for police.
Hobo's Lullaby
Song by
Woody Guthrie
Go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Listen to the steel rails hummin'
That's the hobo's lullaby
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Do not think 'bout tomorrow
Let tomorrow come and go
Tonight you're in a nice warm boxcar
Safe from all that wind and snow
I know the police cause you trouble
They cause trouble everywhere
But when you die and go to Heaven
You'll find no policemen there
So go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Listen to the steel rails hummin'
That's a hobo's lullaby
I attribute my love of music to my parents.
Mostly my mother.
She loved to sing.
She had a lot of 78s.
When 33 1/3 RPs came out she bought Broadway cast recordings.
There were about a half dozen of them that she played over and over.
I learned how to operate our Victrola before I could flush a toilet.
South Pacific was my favorite.
There was a song....
Keep in mind... I'm about 6.
I'm a kid growing up in a very southern and racially prejudiced town in Kentucky.
This song explained it better than anything.
Regarding Nat Cole....
My father had his buddies that he grew up with.
They did things together.
They went to Miami every year in January.
There were 4 of them.
My father was the only one who brought his wife and son.
One guy brought his girl friend and left his wife and kid at home.
I was 6 and got this.
One time in the very cold winter ....
They met in Chicago.
Driving from Lexington, KY to Chicago was a long cold trip.
We went there to see Old King Cole ... the merry old soul.
That's what I thought.
I remember getting dressed up that night.
Wearing my bow tie.
We went to this place to eat and afterward .....
There was this black guy who played the piano and he sang.
I couldn't understand it.
Why did we travel so far just to hear this black guy sing
?
My father saw Elvis twice in Vegas.
I never saw him.
He was in Louisville plenty of times, but I could never get Jackee to go to his shows.
We missed the Beach Boys when Glen Campbell was singing for Bryan.
