Every once in awhile a song slap the front of my head and I keep running it over and over until I relent and check it out on Youtube. "Long Black Rifle" has recently bounced off my frontal lobes and while I own the original album (mono -sigh), I went to the computer to download it. In passing, I found Joni Mitchell's version and HOLY CROW! I'm going to speculate Joni pulled it from the Trio's record, but her playing and vocal make it an entirely different and lovelier version. I suspect because her feminine voice embraces the sorrow of true love wrenched away by violence. The Nick, Dave, Bob version is a bit like a story told around a campfire.
Just my opinion, and I do believe the original Trio sounded best, yes loved the Stewart version as well.
