Ken and other friends, the link to Joni Mitchell's version on Youtube is as follows:
For me, she sing the story as a woman's rent heart, her hope that the love awaits her in heaven.
It's fairly often we hear Kingston Trio songs made into huge hits by others. Generally I have to say to those around me, "That was first made popular by the Kingston Trio". remembering the Trio was mentored in the early years by Lou Gottlieb and Jane Bowers, it shouldn't come as a surprise. Recently I've been on a Beach Boys kick. There is no question that the close harmonies are solidly based in Al Jardine's love of the Trio as well as Brian Wilson being influenced by "The Four Freshmen" and the Trio once again. Al said in an interview, they'd harmonize "Sloop John B" at the bus stop while waiting for school, long before Wilson's interpretation.
None of this has anything to do with Joni Mitchell, other than The guitars and harmonies of the K3 may have drawn her closer to perfecting her own music.
Enjoy her interpretation of the beautiful and painful "Long Black Rifle".
