That list of songs is very interesting…..
You know, just about the time you think the Kingston Trio is gone forever ….
That no one cares about the Trio ….. anymore ….
Out of the blue … they get some attention …….
And, in your mind … you’re back again dreaming about these guys and what they meant to you when you were so young …..
That’s how it was for me and my friend Tom.
Tom was not like any other kid I ever knew…..
Or … any other person I ever knew after we weren’t kids anymore.
The reason for this was that when Tom was a kid …. he took being a kid further than anyone I’d ever known.….
Tom was a superlative kid.
And, he never stopped being one.
So, just what was … or what is a superlative kid?
It’s a person who does not live in an adult world.
Now, let me ask you … which world would you want to be in … more than any other?
Wouldn’t it be a kid’s world?
This is why Walt Disney built Disneyland.
It’s also why there was a Kingston Trio.
So, it was only fitting that my friend Tom introduced me to the Kingston Trio.
When he did this … I got to experience the Trio’s world.
Which was a kid’s world.
Except, these kids could drink and ####.
Isn’t this what “Three Jolly Coachmen” was all about?
The guys in the Kingston Trio weren’t musicians or singers.
They were adventurers.
If there hadn’t been drinking or sex … wouldn’t you think that Walt Disney invented them?
When you watch the 7-up commercials … aren’t they depicting the guys you imagined them to be?
In the 7-up commercials … there’s no question that they are acting.
Well, here’s the thing … starting out … they were acting.
Like slightly grown up kids.
I’ve always said that if there had not been a hungry i album …
There never would have been a Kingston Trio.
Because … in this show … they were performers … like in a play.
Each song was a performance.
These songs told stories and the guys in the Trio were the people in the stories.
They weren’t singers, or guitar players…..
They were actors who acted out great stories
The hit of the show was South Coast.
No doubt about it.
Because it had what every great story has to have.
It’s drama.
I don’t know of another song that the Trio did that could match the drama of South Coast.
It was Nick’s greatest performance, and it was the Trio’s greatest performance.
To this day … I can still hear that lion screaming.
If I say to you …. A fellow lost his watch in a railway station …..
Doesn’t it all begin again for you?
