Ken, I agree with you on the sound of the Tubaphone tone ring. Combining that tone ring with a 12-inch rim is a great idea. The Tubaphone sound sure worked for Pete Seeger, Dave Guard and John Stewart.

As for long necks, don't abandon hope. The prices on the old Vega PS-5s have been coming down over the last few years.
