So what else is new, eh? (hahaha)
YES YES YES...I absolutely loved Joni Mitchell's "Ladies of the Canyon" album, and ironically, haven't listened to it in a long time.
Reason being, a girl I used to go out with (Wendy) gave me Joni's "Clouds" album as a "Going Steady" gift....
which now seems like a hundred years ago....and I find myself going back to that one for two reasons:
(1) Nostalgic Memories & (2) I Love The Songs....
Especially: "Songs To Aging Children Come"
which Wendy would sing to me (while strumming on her guitar) followed by "Both Sides Now" (aka: Clouds).
Wendy was a cross between Joan Baez and Sylvia Tyson. Not bad for the old Brucester, eh? (hahaha)
Recently, I also got hold of JONI MITCHELL's four Reprise Albums Box Set (LPs/180gram vinyl)....
Re-issued by Rhino Records of California:
1 - SONG TO A SEAGULL (1968)
2 - CLOUDS (1969)
3 - LADIES OF THE CANYON (1970)
4 - BLUE (1971)
As you mentioned, Jim ~> Joni Mitchell's "Blue" got enormeous attention, with Rolling Stone Magazine naming it:
THE BEST ALBUM EVER RECORDED BY A FEMALE VOCALIST

<> "River" / our favourite song on "Blue":
<> "Songs To Aging Children Come" / for Wendy wherever she is / Thanks for Joni's album:

Great stuff Brucester. The song appears on Joni's 1970 LP Ladies of the Canyon , which is my favorite of hers and the one that I have always thought her best - even though her very next LP Blue is the one that usually gets all the props. I just think that every element of Ladies - composition, instrumentals, vocals - heck, even the record sleeve - is the best that Joni has done so far. Previous Message
...from the album: JONI MITCHELL AT NEWPORT (July 19th 1969)
In the words of Joni Mitchell:
Intro
There's a young man in New York City, I don't know his name, but he's blind, and he sits on the street and plays his clarinet
for whatever money people will give him. I've often ridden past him and wondered about his life, and I've written this song
for him. It's called "He Played Real Good For Free."
The Song
I slept last night in a good hotel
I went shopping today for jewels
The wind rushed around in the dirty town
And the children let out from the schools
I was standing on a noisy corner
Waiting for the walking green
Across the street he stood
And he played real good on his clarinet
For Free
Now me, I play for fortune
And those velvet curtain calls
I've got a black limousine
And two gentlemen
Escorting me to the halls
And I play if you have the money
Or - if you're a friend to me
But the one man band
By the quick lunch stand
He was playing real good
For Free
Nobody stopped to hear him
Though he played so sweet and high
They knew he had never been on their TV
So they passed his music by
I meant to go over and ask for a song
Maybe put on some kind of harmony
I heard his refrain as the signal changed
He was playing real good
For Free
- Joni Mitchell
ps: Joni's one-time boyfriend, David Crosby (1941-2023) covered this song in 2021, and named his 8th studio album: "FOR FREE"
It has been in Crosby's "live" repertoire since the 1970s.
