Your point is well taken Jim. I have an old Stereo Review Magazine from 1975 that has a Gordon Lightfoot interview in it. Lightfoot studied Orchestration (May not be right term) and had a good knowledge of when and how to add strings and horns to songs.
Your example is a good one where you really don't need to add anything else to it. But Don Quixote IMHO is one where the orchestra added makes a really good song great. (Still sounded great in concert without).
That would have been a good question for Lightfoot to answer. What songs get strings and what don't. MTABob
