We knew each other.
And, we got into a fight.
I let him win the fight because I thought it was all stupid.
He was a major, major A-hole.
But, a very talented guy.
In later years, we became friends, and through him, I first got to really know Bob Shane.
The New Kingston Trio with Jim and Pat was incredible. It took a while to get over the shock of the absence of Dave, Nick, and John.
But, after this was possible, they did some very high quality work.
Some great songs, some great arrangements, some great singing and playing.
Along with everything else, you had to get used to Jim's not being a picker. He was a frailer.
The last time I saw Horine was in Lexington, in about 1992, he did a Trio tribute show.
He told me that he and Jim went to Bob, and said, "We can't continue to do this without you paying us more." Bob said, "I've got 5 kids to raise." So, they quit.
The incredible thing about Dave was that he could Seeger pick, Scruggs pick, and frail all in the same song, and for a guy who was left-handed, he did it right-handed.
Regarding the Japan album.... 25 years ago... someone told me about something called e-bay...I'd never heard of it.... there, I got a copy of the album. It was my first e-bay purchase.
1000s of purchases later, we have an e-bay store.
