Means a lot to me. Thank You.
I began this thread because the night before I was unable to sleep.
I put on our TV at 3 o'clock in the morning and there was this movie playing on our Canadian Cable channel:
>>> "Ode To Billy Joe" <<<
For some reason they spelled "Billie" wrong, but they got the actors right....
Robbie Benson as "Billy Joe" McCallister
Glynnis O'Connor as Bobbie Lee Hartley (girlfriend)
After watching the movie, I took out Bobbie Gentry's LP: "Ode To Billie Joe" and decided to listen to it.
At first, I got hell for playing this record so early in the morning....
but then Julie offered to make us some "Dunkin' Coffee" so all was good.
<> Ode To Billie Joe
Everybody has a different take about what was thrown off the Tallahatchie Bridge....
flowers, a ring, even a baby.
According to Bobbie Gentry, the real message revolves around the nonchalant way the family talks about the suicide.
They sit around at the dinner table, eating their peas and apple pie, and talking....
without even realizing that Billie Joe's girlfriend (a member of the family) is sitting at the table.
"A study of unconscious cruelty." - Bobbie Gentry
