A gift that I've always cherished is one given to me by Bob Shane 25-30 years ago. We were out on tour and had just checked into our hotel rooms when my phone rang. It was Shane, and he said "I have something for you. Come to my room." [click] So I went over to his room, and he handed me a 12x15 manila envelope and said "For your birthday." Inside was a concert booklet which the biggest concert acts used to print for sale at live performances. It was for a Kingston Trio performance at the Hollywood Bowl, with two opening acts: Keely Smith and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

I took that booklet with me each time I performed at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert, CA since Keely lived in Palm Springs, but I kept missing her. So I never got her signature in the booklet. But I did get signatures from Dave Brubeck, Joe Morello, and [Senator] Eugene Wright. By that time Paul Desmond had already passed. This is one of my most treasured pieces of memorabilia.
