I can see the King's point as well as the POW, but I don't think the public will be satisfied. Buck House will still hold receptions and the State Banquets, but the renovations were initiated under the late Queen and it was understood at the time that when completed, the Monarch would reside at the Palace.
I could be very mistaken, but the taxpayers may not see it the same way as the Royals.

I would think it is economically more sensible for the King and Queen to sleep and eat where they are already well catered for.
BP will get plenty of use with both formal and informal events.

I understand what you're saying and it makes perfect sense. I was just scanning a couple of UK media sites and they're making a fuss and claiming the King has made a mistake.

I also think of the next reign.
William and Catherine are establishing a forever home for their family.

Clarence House can be the forever home for Charles and Camilla. Whoever goes first, the other can live on comfortably without being forced out of their settled home.

In time, William and Catherine will have to choose between BP and KP as their London residence. I don't see them maintaining both.

To me it makes sense to develop "family" homes and leave BP to be a formal setting. That would avoid forced disruptions to living quarters and forced "eviction" of dowagers.

Whatever the King decides some sections of the media will find fault. This meanas the palace can be open to the public more. The Royal Palace in Madrid is not the King's residence either, doesn't seem to cause any upset.

I believe Charles stated years ago that he planned to use BP for official/State functions and would live in CH. This announcement isn't surprising, but I admit I'm kind of sad that it won't function as a Royal residence during Charles's reign.

Didn't the late queen say that she would have preferred to live in Clarence House, where she and Philip were raising their family? Apparently no one wants to *live* there.

Philip wanted to stay at CH, but was told they had to move to BP. He wasn't happy at all.

The late Queen always saw Buckingham Palace as more of an office than a home. As often as she could she would go and stay in Windsor Castle. The Palace is to big, to public. Most members of the royal family prefer to stay in their smaller properties where they can enjoy greater privacy and relaxation.
