I think with Fergie, it was a double standard. Charles was the adulterer in the Wales couple (until the truth about Diana came later), Mark Philips the same. Both men. The Queen and Prince Philip sided with Diana, until she messed up and the family wagon circled against her.
Here comes Fergie, the wife, caught in damaging photos and she was the bad guy, especially in the eyes of Philip. Diana was still tolerated by the Royals, even Philip after the divorce. Fergie was not, except by HM. I don't think Andrew had a choice, he was told/pressured to obtain a divorce. I loved the late DOE dearly, but it was said that he looked at Fergie as bringing disgrace to the Royals, well, he forgot about his eldest child.
Anne and Mark's divorce was handled so discreetly it surprised people but didn't make as much of a tidal wave as the others, although it was, "another of the Queen's children divorcing?" Anne and Mark remained close after the divorce also. Mark has always kept discreet after all these years.
