The 3 VB, Baseball and Soccer plan is a smart rework of the 6 target sports plan from the 90s.
Golf's work because Virginia CC funds it so don't screw with what works.
I forsee at least 3-5 sports falling away in next 5 years.
Have seen a couple schools have killed track/xc. Most athletes and associated support expenses. But likely doesn't work here given demographic mix on campus. Sport all do. Previous Message
yep, this 2-3 year window has basically Beach hanging on by a thread with Volleyball (and pretty much Knipe)
Campbell is going to get an offer somewhere in the near future likely,
Knipe will not stay forever
If this AD allows VB to go the way of what I think will/ma happen with Tennis, then there will be ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LEFT in 3 years - NOTHING, but a 4th year of MBB rebuild
the AD attended MVB games this year, I mean if that was not a big huge baseball bat hitting him over the head, then nothing else matters to this guy unless he is totally out to lunch. If he is going around thinking he might hit the lottery with one MBB season, he's absolutely clueless
I get he was at SDSU, different animal, they lucked out with Fischer.....over TWENTY YEARS ago, lol
MBB is not even at a better place than last year, aside from the fact that all teh competition in the Big West basically all had to rebuild as well
whatever you succeed at, rule #1 in any career, company, endeaver is .....DO NOT SCREW UP what works. like (forgive the PC digression here, don't go work for the govt for free adn throw money at political parties, only to watch your company sales drop and screw up what you built and lose all influence in regulations, lol). Without football LBSU needs to fund both basketball programs to be sussesful; however, the 49ers is a volleyball school and all three volleyball programs should be a priority. Baseball is also a sport that LBSU has history and has the ability to be a player with the right coaching and funding. That also means softball should be funded appropriately for title nine reasons. I also think women's soccer should be a secondary priority since this is a game of th masss and has built interest and decent crowds. I think every other sport should be funded to just be competitive in the big west. Maybe golf should be an exception since it appears there are significant outside funds coming in.
I personally believe that the NCAA should reduce the number os sports a school must field to be D1 eligible. Without such a reduction it will be difficult for mid majors to fund their priority sports appropriately. Previous Message
100%
Told by a high up current head coach that AD plan is to replicate his beloved SD State model. Throw everything into basketball and hope to reach a Final.Four like Fisher did. Once.
Not my words. Previous Message
going forward, Beach can't be everything to everyone
I love MBB, but realistically, the school could spend a lot of money chasing a pipe-dream and diminishing return.
the budgets and payrolls to compete with will be obscene for MBB & WBB.
Can Beach target some sports and simply compete for Big West competitiveness.
the way I see it
Volleyball has to be #1
overall, for almost 30 years, it's stood the test of time, hardly ever in a lower tier in conference (whether MVB, WVB, or Beach VB). all 3 with national titles
have shown can have decent attendance, even WVB Tyler brought it back up to 1500/year when Joy had killed it to less than 700/ year. even thru Joy, Beach was in the upper tier albeit having won a title since 2014
MVB is bringing prestige, so is Beach VB
WVB would need the biggest boost, a huge challenge with a coaching staff learning on teh job. It is realistic to keep attendance at 1500+, it would need NIL pretty clearly though. this year may be hanging on by a thread to not finish below 6th for like maybe the first time since 1987
MVB, in a precarious 2-3 year window before maybe Knipe retires to keep momentum from a decade of success that is up there with BG's 15 year run from '1988-2003, and Snow's decade of Baseball starting in 1989 ish.
#2) Baseball. difficult like WVB, will need NIL and schollie money increases. Still the program has shown it can put butts on seats and has the most community based appeal due to Blair uniqueness, but like WVB & the help Reagan needs to show results and some some resources next couple of years.
after that?
I don't know, H20 polo & golf have shown to put out quality teams, they are country club sports,
but priorties? and I'm biased - you can try to help MBB greatness, but can't get caught up in putting too many resources and having some miracle happen in today's NIL construct for MBB.
If I was AD, I would try to keep Volleyball and Baseball at the forefront - spectator sports, they have and can bring in prestige, they face challenges, but maybe the most 'doable' of the sports to excel in.
If you throw every available resource at MBB (& WBB) and starve the others, you'll end up with nothing.
