He's going to be fine and quite frankly he should have been fired a decade ago for being a barely average coach and for wasting the best years of the Pyramid.
I for one, won't miss him. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Previous Message
you didn't bring up bias, the other commenter did.
we all have bias, anyone that thinks they do not is ignorant or obtuse
all things being equal, yes experience is a plus
still, he's 62, that means the question of his entrenched qualities and ability to adapt would be questioned, and he'd still have to account in an interview for the last 8 years
Tyler's inexperience was true, though his other qualities were far better to overcome that, for at least two years. and his impatience obviously is pretty clear now, lol
as to Monson's friends vouching for him, unless some AD is blind, they should weight that somewhat sceptically and appropriately, especially at age 62. those friends didn't help him much the last 8 years.
an AD would have to gloss over a lot of details to go with Monson. as you say I have familiarity bias with him
bias. I do find some of the candidates thrown about interesting and a bit comical. SDSU assistants? maybe they'd be ok, that for sure would come from the AD's familiarity bias factored in.
recency bias with MOnson's BWCT win, that may factor in to his chances. It sure factored with Cal Poly gave an extension after one good week to Callero. it takes a good AD to resist overreacting to such things like one good week.
recency bias wth the media was in full display, which for media is not surprising.
I would like Scholl to get a shot, and it's not even famiilarity bias since I don't know him, it's total flyer from perception, lol, perception of recruiting bias, lol
we just don't know Smitheran well enough to know how good he'd be at drilling down to what matters, doubtful he's really experienced at hiring, and a lot of people may not know really how to avoid pitfalls, so they go with their own bias. it's a bit scary, we (or I ) have no idea where or how good at discerning teaching/leadership talent those who advise them are.
Amy seems solid, so have to credit Ted there, may be a good reason to have him part of the selection process.
asking a lot to get the right type of coach/leader the program could sorely use.

I never mentioned bias, so why would I explain it. But since you asked.
Monson has a lot of head coaching experience. The record is uneven, but he has had some success, he hasn't had any known NCAA infractions and he isn't a prima donna (he might have some enthusiasm issues, but he can fake it through an interview and/or that's seen as less problematice than being too demanding.)
I'm sure you know that hiring a person with previous head coaching experience is viewed as more favorable than someone who hasn't--that might be a bias, but it's also something that has come up previously with Tyler and the interim and lots of other situations. Monson will have also have a lot of fairly respected people willing to give him good recommendations. The reality is that you are actually the biased one because you've suffered him for 17 years. lol Previous Message
ok, explain the bias, lol
I'm just asking questions, similar to what I'd think any competent AD would.
since Monson wouldn't be hired for the Long Beach job, for so many reasons stated by many over the last 5-6 years, then why would another D1 AD hire him?
seems to be a pretty simple question Previous Message
Your bias! Time will tell. Previous Message
well, if you say so.
I don't think it's as simple as just having a good interview, which is the one thing I have no doubt Monson can do well, he's shown he can charm the socks off an AD or two.
he's 62, a five year deal will put him at 67
a ton of experience, that comes with a ton of a record. he's got to explain the last 5 years. on the positive one title and one NCAA. other than the 1st place, it's been 10th, 7th, 8th, tied for 5th in a bad league, so I guess if an AD wants to discount 75% of the year and sees USC and the last week as the selling point, then ok..
I agree he's just got to find one AD, and he'll get his coaching fraternity buddies to vouch for him. Then again, he's no Mark Few.
I think any AD he's going to talk to, he's going to have to answer some tough questions about under performance and inconsistency, basically real simple questions, which I guess he could talk his way into a job to an AD willing to accept whatever is said.
D2 or Juco? really, that seems remote, but maybe some AD would do that. Assistant, maybe one of his buddies throws him a job. He's got connections for sure.
the joy Monson exuded about coaching this week - where in hades was that energy evident in promoting and boosting the program the last 8 years? Previous Message
Monson was a management employee (MPP). The MPP retirement package is even better than the faculty because it's determined by the Board and not negotiated with a union.
Monson just coached a team to the tournament, and has a ton of experience. All he has to do is have a good interview, and there will be some opportunities for him at some level, if that's what he wants to do. Previous Message
there is an alternate retirement for PT or lecture staff in CSU, it's much less lucrative, basically a lump sum type of benefit. I don't think that was Monson, since he was full time
didn't even mention he'll have some sort of social security benefit (more jobs than just Gonzaga, Minny, Beach), his wife I'm sure worked at some time
the guy is likely very wealthy as it is - that's what made the slapstick routine probably somewhat annoying (to be polite) to Smitheran and I'm guessing why Smitheran probably had had enough and lashed out awkwardly after viewing the Bozo the Clown Act for a week.
For a guy people claim has so much class, there's a side of him that is a rather self-serving blind spot IMO, which explains his never really lifting a finger to promote Beach first and foremost as part of his job. His self-promotion was in full view last week. Him saying he learned to 'stay in teh moment' from his players was a crock, and then he couldn't even do that by running around with the clown act all the way to tip-off. smh.
I guess we'll never know if we could have beat Arizona if he had just shut down the media circus requests after Sunday. It was interesting that the team reverted to the same bad habits on offense they displayed before the BWCT.
It's time for me to give it up. Monson is gone finally. He is who he is, he's not gonna get another D1 HC job, ADs aren't stupid. May he have great health for whatever he does. Previous Message
See the other board for Sparky’s knowledgeable inputs on Cal State retirement and health. He is not destitute. Plus he had a 1.3 MM severance package from MN. MN was a firing. LB was a decision not to renew contract at end of term. Mark Few should focus his attention on fly fishing and not retirement packages 😀 Previous Message
Gonzaga: my guess is with 5 years or so, at least $250 / month
Minnesota - 7 years - and that was with a high salary - if it's just 10% of his salary, $50k a year, so say $25k a year
Beach: @ a peak of $350k, and with 17 years, the standard would be
$148 k/ year. I suspect a big part of Monson signing that 5 year extensiondeal at lower salary was tacting on for compounding the Calif retirement benefit contribution, vs. he always could have gone out and looked for another job at that point
so the Bozo the Clown show about working for free (incorrect in the first place) and not being able to pay mortgage, while great for all the hardee haw haw while poking fun at Beach & Smitheran, just slapstick BS
Monson should be getting close to $175k/year even in retirement, & can't believe he'll be getting less than $150k/ year. but maybe that's chump change to Mark Few, and Beach did 'wrong' by Monson.
the average person doesn't even sniff that sort of coin in their best year.
Beach took very good care of Monson
he's hardly going to be destitute. I mean his kids can all stay at home and finish all their education at Long Beach State and get the one of the best value degrees anywhere for a cost one can't get anywhere else.....plus free attendance to all athletic events!!!!
