well, if you say so.
I don't think it's as simple as just having a good interview, which is the one thing I have no doubt Monson can do well, he's shown he can charm the socks off an AD or two.
he's 62, a five year deal will put him at 67
a ton of experience, that comes with a ton of a record. he's got to explain the last 5 years. on the positive one title and one NCAA. other than the 1st place, it's been 10th, 7th, 8th, tied for 5th in a bad league, so I guess if an AD wants to discount 75% of the year and sees USC and the last week as the selling point, then ok..
I agree he's just got to find one AD, and he'll get his coaching fraternity buddies to vouch for him. Then again, he's no Mark Few.
I think any AD he's going to talk to, he's going to have to answer some tough questions about under performance and inconsistency, basically real simple questions, which I guess he could talk his way into a job to an AD willing to accept whatever is said.
D2 or Juco? really, that seems remote, but maybe some AD would do that. Assistant, maybe one of his buddies throws him a job. He's got connections for sure.
the joy Monson exuded about coaching this week - where in hades was that energy evident in promoting and boosting the program the last 8 years?
Monson was a management employee (MPP). The MPP retirement package is even better than the faculty because it's determined by the Board and not negotiated with a union.
Monson just coached a team to the tournament, and has a ton of experience. All he has to do is have a good interview, and there will be some opportunities for him at some level, if that's what he wants to do.
there is an alternate retirement for PT or lecture staff in CSU, it's much less lucrative, basically a lump sum type of benefit. I don't think that was Monson, since he was full time
didn't even mention he'll have some sort of social security benefit (more jobs than just Gonzaga, Minny, Beach), his wife I'm sure worked at some time
the guy is likely very wealthy as it is - that's what made the slapstick routine probably somewhat annoying (to be polite) to Smitheran and I'm guessing why Smitheran probably had had enough and lashed out awkwardly after viewing the Bozo the Clown Act for a week.
For a guy people claim has so much class, there's a side of him that is a rather self-serving blind spot IMO, which explains his never really lifting a finger to promote Beach first and foremost as part of his job. His self-promotion was in full view last week. Him saying he learned to 'stay in teh moment' from his players was a crock, and then he couldn't even do that by running around with the clown act all the way to tip-off. smh.
I guess we'll never know if we could have beat Arizona if he had just shut down the media circus requests after Sunday. It was interesting that the team reverted to the same bad habits on offense they displayed before the BWCT.
It's time for me to give it up. Monson is gone finally. He is who he is, he's not gonna get another D1 HC job, ADs aren't stupid. May he have great health for whatever he does.
See the other board for Sparky’s knowledgeable inputs on Cal State retirement and health. He is not destitute. Plus he had a 1.3 MM severance package from MN. MN was a firing. LB was a decision not to renew contract at end of term. Mark Few should focus his attention on fly fishing and not retirement packages 😀
Gonzaga: my guess is with 5 years or so, at least $250 / month
Minnesota - 7 years - and that was with a high salary - if it's just 10% of his salary, $50k a year, so say $25k a year
Beach: @ a peak of $350k, and with 17 years, the standard would be
$148 k/ year. I suspect a big part of Monson signing that 5 year extensiondeal at lower salary was tacting on for compounding the Calif retirement benefit contribution, vs. he always could have gone out and looked for another job at that point
so the Bozo the Clown show about working for free (incorrect in the first place) and not being able to pay mortgage, while great for all the hardee haw haw while poking fun at Beach & Smitheran, just slapstick BS
Monson should be getting close to $175k/year even in retirement, & can't believe he'll be getting less than $150k/ year. but maybe that's chump change to Mark Few, and Beach did 'wrong' by Monson.
the average person doesn't even sniff that sort of coin in their best year.
Beach took very good care of Monson
he's hardly going to be destitute. I mean his kids can all stay at home and finish all their education at Long Beach State and get the one of the best value degrees anywhere for a cost one can't get anywhere else.....plus free attendance to all athletic events!!!!
