Since the Washington State Tournament recognizes the individuals that are at the top of their classification, and the points the state wrestlers gain during the tournament recognize the top teams, an additional tournament recognizing the best dual teams could be done too.
Example: In 3A Region 1 tournament, Stanwood has seven wrestlers (there are teams with up to 16 wrestlers in that Region tournament), the majority of those Stanwood wrestlers will do well at State. However, this year Stanwood’s team went 3-4 in league duals (that is according to WESCO standings and may be slightly different if all matches were not recorded). I am not putting down Stanwood, but using them to show that a team that finishes high in State, may not be the best dual team.
So, next year they will be no longer have a regional. If there can be a dual tournament for the top 16 dual teams in each classification two weeks before State, there could be two “rankings” of team champions. If this happened, then with Stanwood’s dual record, they would not be one of the top 16 dual teams in 3A classifications, and would not be wrestling for the dual team championship of 3A. The team that does well in a 16 dual team bracket, their 14 wrestlers would be recognized and be deserving of that team placement.
