Even macho Satanic pundit Anton LaVey said that an occult priest's power is in his sensitivity. John Baines in _Los Brujos Hablan_ said that an Hermetic mage's temperament and alchemy make him too vulnerable to be in a competitive relationship.
There are all kinds of things from jogging to St. John's Wort to combat depression, but sometimes, a witch has to deal with a "whammy" from a jealous person. I learned from Lady Mimi's post that oil of turpentine can help to banish bad entities from a building. Also, it seems that extract of pomegranate can do the same thing for a person's physical body.
I guess what I am driving at is that when I have seen depression in witches, it is so often because they haven't found enough trustworthy friends, and have become targets of false ones. This is of course no excuse for not doing the necessary study and energy work necessary to become an adept witch. But as with any vocation, good company is essential to real or lasting success.
One curious phenomenon I have encountered is that a weak rival might try to hex a person, and the target actually suffers quite a slowdown: not because the hex was powerful, but because the jealous "occultist" launching the attack is willing to take physical means to harm the target, if the hex does not work. Thus, the Holy Guardian Angel, him- or herself can start pulling our plugs until we learn to organize our days and our lists of friends in a more healthy fashion.
Just some of the lessons my slowness has taught me over the past few years. In order to live as a wizard of witch, it is necessary to learn to psychically seal oneself off from subversives, be they family or fellow users of alchemy. It seems that the gods appreciate it when we talk to Them more about the things we really like. Dyer and Chopra call this "positive displacement", if I remember correctly.
