The correct position is 10 feet on the third baseline extended i.e. if the 3rd baseline were to continue straight through the plate. This enables you to see all 3. I tried explaining this to all umpires but none seem to agree as taking advice from a player is likely not the best delivery method, I understand. Watch any game on TV (baseball or softball) and see where the home plate umpire is positioned on plays at the plate, they will be on 3rd baseline extended then rotate if needed to maintain view of the ball but will never lose sight of the plate.
